Classic looks aside, perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the opinion is its yearly calendar. You might be asking yourself : why do we need an annual calendar? Especially on a watch like this (unlike the standard 8500) which has a quickset date. It is cool in an horological feel, in the manner that uncommon and esoteric complications are generally cool, but you’ll likely wind up at midnight at the end of a 30 day month waiting to find the date and month change over. You would better not blink, because unlike most Omega moves, this occurs instantly, a significant improvement over the normal 8500. This is thanks to the 8601, a part of one of the most innovative families of mechanical motions on earth. It is basically an updated 8500, which can be rather a compliment. It seems the same, and for the large part performs the same, but you get an added month complication as a portion of the annual calendar in addition to a quickset month and date, which can be appreciated. The De Ville Annual Calendar, this variant together with the Roman numerals and the Hour Vision, are actually some of my favorite Omega watches. I’d have them before any Speedmaster or Seamaster. I suppose that makes me an outlier one of Omega lovers, but something about both of these watches, especially using all the silver/white dials and blued seconds hands, actually sings to me. I also like the 8601 to the 8500 (although you can get this motion in Seamasters as well). It is not really so much for the annual calendar, although that’s very neat, it’s really for the instantaneous date change. I’ve been wearing 8500s for decades now and the slow date change is the one thing I have ever seen to not like about it, so that’s a big perk for me. Uncharacteristically, however, I would really suggest that you get this opinion on the bracelet within the ring, despite its own dressy look. The De Ville bracelet is just extremely nice and comfortable, and it truly looks cohesive with this particular case.

It is a collection far from the limelight that often graces Omega’s flagship collections, and, in my opinion, is among the last holdouts, in a comparatively affordable sense, of a timeless watch intended to slip thickly beneath a top cuff. Some watches are underappreciated, a few watches are somewhat understated; I feel this watch appears to be both. For our most recent post, where I compare modern and classic examples of this Breguet Type XX, click here.Caleb Anderson is the Director of Outreach in the online vintage watch boutique theoandharris.com. Currently located near new york, he’s a persistent pupil in all things historical, a writer on watches, along with a casual runner. The Omega De Ville is your brand’s dressiest line of watches, usually somewhat reserved in design. This specific De Ville, with its blued seconds hand and superbly polished applied Roman numerals, is not the most reserved watch the company has ever made but it’s among the very striking. Aside from its beauty there is the extremely advanced 8601 co-axial automatic motion in which is not only true, but possesses the fairly rare annual calendar complication. The Omega De Ville is a watch that I’ve long believed hasn’t gotten the attention it is due. However, I believe that De Ville, be it using only a date or an yearly calendar like this one is , is one of the prettiest versions Omega makes.

Those two timepiece families largely dominate the picture we think of when somebody mentions Omega. Let us think about some of the more noteworthy things Omega is famous for. Well there is the moon landing watch for one – which was a Speedmaster. There are the contemporary James Bond watches, those are all Seamasters – which are on my head right now as I simply saw Skyfall a couple of days back. Omega is a sport watch brand to Americans, and that is how we enjoy it.Internationally Omega is more than that. These two arms of Omega are years old and signify another, more formal side of the brand. Even if they do not signify what you’re looking for in an Omega, they’re worth being comfortable with. Let us take a look at one of the newer De Ville versions – the recently redone Co-Axial Chronograph. This might be one of the first times I have really discussed a De Ville version on aBlogtoWatch. Mainly because a number of the older models are not to my taste. Which is ironic since the very first ever Omega I possessed was a classic hand-wound De Ville from the 1970s. When I saw the brand new Co-Axial Chronograph models at Baselworld 2012, I knew Omega had a relative hit. My difficulty with the elderly non-three hand men’s De Ville models was that they seemed to lack a cohesive design, and were asymmetrical in their appearance.A few years ago Omega made the De Ville Hour Vision which is what all modern De Ville versions are predicated on. Omega went back into the origins of the De Ville collection was supposed to be and come out with a visually intriguing dressy men’s watch with a touch of classic design as well a subtle Art Deco cosmetic.
